Wash Tubbs is considered the pioneer of the adventure strips that ruled the newspaper's funnies pages from the 20's to the 60's. Here is a super early example, to be exact, the 44th daily in the entire series and from early in its inaugural year. Crane was a master of cartooning and his animated style exaggerated body expressions and posture to great effect as shown in this example. I own the first 18 volumes of the NBM reprints running until 1943 but have only just made a small dent in the series. From those that have read a lot more strip series than myself, Wash Tubbs, Little Orphan Annie and Terry and the Pirates are consistently the ones they recommend for the best stories and reading although many others come highly recommended too.
