Yukio Izumi (泉幸夫, 1938‑2022) est un mangaka actif des années 1950 aux années 1970. Il publie dans tous les grands magazines Shōnen de l’époque, parmi lesquels Shōnen Gahō, Manga King, Adventure King ou encore Shōnen King.
Son titre le plus célèbre reste The Big Machine, un récit d’action où apparaît un robot géant piloté depuis la tête. Cette configuration précède la formule que Go Nagai rendra célèbre avec Mazinger Z. Le dessin d’Izumi est typique du shōnen des années 1960 avec une narration centrée sur la technologie.
Izumi est également l’auteur de The Yokai Family, publié en 1967 dans Manga Oh. La série met en scène un ensemble de yōkai, akuma, yūrei, kami, kappa et oni, voire des créatures importées d'occident comme le monstre de Frankenstein.

The first mecha robot in manga was Tetsujin 28-go, created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama in 1956. This is considered to be the first time a GIANT robot appeared in manga.
The first mecha robot with a person inside is generally attributed to Mazinger Z, created by Go Nagai in 1972.
These two stories helped start the mecha genre that we see in many manga and anime today!
But there’s also 'Big Machine' published in Shōnen between 1967 and 1968. This manga featured a big mecha robot with Kotsetsu and his father Dr.Noa (there’s always a doctor) inside the head piloting the robot. It can also be remotely controlled using an M-horn that imitates a black telephone, but this M-horn can only be used by Kotetsu.
