À dix-huit ans, Osamu Kanno (菅野修 - 1953) quitte son village natal de Nishine pour Tokyo, avec l'ambition de devenir peintre. Sa trajectoire bascule lorsqu'il découvre les œuvres de Sanpei Shirato et surtout celles de Yoshiharu Tsuge, qui deviendra son mentor spirituel et principale source d'inspiration. Cette révélation l'oriente vers le manga, où il s'impose rapidement. Il débute dans le magazine Yakō, fondé par Takano Shinzo, ancien éditeur de Garo, dans le but explicite de prolonger l'héritage de Yoshiharu Tsuge. Sa première œuvre, Melancholy Death, précède de peu sa véritable entrée dans Garo en juin 1973 avec Starry Night Story, qui le propulse au rang des auteurs majeurs du mouvement.

Osamu Kanno incarne l'esprit du Garo-kei. Ce terme, au-delà d’une esthétique alternative, introspective et parfois déroutante, s’applique aux auteurs affiliés à l'esprit du magazine Garo, qu'ils y aient été publiés ou non. En Occident, on parlera de manga alternatif ou underground, en opposition au marché commercial dominant. Osamu Kanno en est l'un des représentants les plus emblématiques, tant par sa démarche artistique que par son héritage éditorial.

Son travail mêlera peu à peu crayon, encre, peinture au pinceau, aérosol, collages de journaux et magazines japonais et calligraphie traditionnelle, s'éloignant ainsi de son maître dans la forme sans pour autant en oublier l'esprit. Cette hybridation visuelle confère à ses planches une texture unique. Après la disparition de Garo en 2002, il poursuit son chemin dans AX, son successeur naturel, tout en explorant d'autres formats. Son influence dépasse les cercles du manga alternatif et séduit un public international.

At the age of 18 yo, Osamu Kanno (1953-) moved from the very small village of Nishine to the big city of Tokyo! His initial intent was to become an artist/painter but after discovering the works of Sanpei Shirato and especially Yoshiharu Tsuge, he chose a career in manga. Yoshiharu Tsuge was in a sense his mentor, greatest influence and biggest inspiration and this is very visible in the Garo works of Osamu Kanno.

Osamu Kanno made his debut with Melancholy Death in the manga magazine Yakou (夜行) Night Train which was founded by Takano Shinzo (a former editor of Garo) mainly for the purpose of relating to Yoshiharu Tsuge. His Garo debut (June, 1973), Starry Night Story followed just a couple of months later and put him in between the (now) greats and made him a Garo-kei !

Osamu Kanno was one of the Garo crowd that could pin down his readers with awkward yet beautifully wordless art and when the words finally appeared they would create an inexplicable emotional connection and leave us puzzled! If there was to be a definite definition of Garo-kei art then maybe the art of Osamu Kanno should be used to demonstrate this definition.
