Here is a nice piece of history and part of the mythology of Milton Caniff. Early on in his career, Caniff was a budding young actor with promise and he was torn between art and acting. At the time, Caniff was working at an Ohio paper along with the legendary Billy Ireland and this is the advice that Ireland gave which Milt took to heart. The rest is history. This historic moment was recreated in this illustration from 1978, probably a good 45 years after those immortal words were first conjured. The date on the art does coincide with the founding of the Billy Ireland Museum in Ohio which Caniff gifted all his art to and helped establish. This is a perfect fit with my every growing Caniff collection and am happy to give it a home. A big thank you to Michael O for letting this one pass on to me.
