Description
Kazuyoshi Torii (1946-2022) was a Japanese mangaka known for his outrageous, gag-driven comedic style. Early in his career he worked as an assistant to Fujio Akatsuka, a formative experience that shaped his approach to absurd and slapstick humor.
He started in 1968 with the one-shot Kuchinashi Inu (“Dog With No Mouth”) in Weekly Shōnen Sunday. His most famous creation, Toilet Hakase (“Dr. Toilet”), began shortly afterward in Weekly Shōnen Jump and ran through the 1970s, ultimately becoming a bestseller with tens of millions of copies in circulation. Its anarchic, scatological humor made Torii one of the emblematic gag-manga artists of the early Jump era.
Beyond Toilet Hakase, Torii produced several other comedy-focused works and remained active for decades. Later in life, he taught manga at Aichi Shukutoku University, mentoring younger artists.
