Only 15-20 finished and inked Barks original covers are still in existence today. The rest were routinely destroyed at the printing plant. This surviving cover is from Donald Duck Album, Four Color 1140, published in 1960. Like in all Barks gag covers, he strived for composition and simplicity. All the details are systematic parts of the compositional whole - the nephews´ eyes, for instance.
For some reason, the German and Scandinavian Disney weeklies used this cover both in 1961 and 1962. See the additional scans.

About Carl Barks

Carl Barks was an American cartoonist, author, and painter. He is best known for his comics about Donald Duck and as the creator of Scrooge McDuck. He worked anonymously until late in his career; fans dubbed him The Duck Man and The Good Duck Artist. In 1987, Barks was one of the three inaugural inductees of the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
