After pursuing a scientific education at high school, Frédéric, or simply Fred, Campoy went to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in his native town Pau for two years. He founded an art studio with his friend Roland Pignault and together, they made their debut in commercial illustration and comics fanzines. In 1998, they made their comics debut at Delcourt with the first installment in Jean-Pierre Pécau's 'Arcanes' series, for which they cooperated on the artwork. Pignault continued the series on his own, and Campoy took on two books 'Little Big Joe' together with writer Wilfried Lupano, a former barkeeper from Pau, in 2001.
