Edward Dudley Pout was born at Frog Island Farm in Herne, Kent. He got an Art Scholarship at Margarate School of Art at the early age of 13, and stayed for two years. He worked in the family farming business, before becoming a commercial artist. He took his earliest assignments from the East Kent Poster Services in Dover and then became manager of Stoll Art Studios in Chatham. Pout was an artist for British film posters in London until 1938.
