José Pires had his first publications in Portuguese magazines like Cavaleiro Andante and Fugulha. One day, Pires decided to send some of his work to the Belgian Lombard Editions. At first, this didn't turn out successfully, but later on, when Pires moved to Brussels, he met Jean Dufaux. Through Dufaux, he got some of his work published in the Belgian magazines Tintin and Hello Bédé. With Dufaux as his scenarist, he started the western series 'Irigo' in Tintin. Pires often based his drawings of characters on photographs. Many famous Western stars from the cinema have been featured in his comics.
