Description

Soji Yamakawa (1908–1989) was one of Japan's most celebrated adventure illustrators, known for his detailed, painterly realism and impressive visuals of the natural world.
His work dominated emonogatari publications in the 1950s, with titles like Shōnen Kenya and Shōnen Ace making him a household name.
Shōnen Ace originally ran from 1954 to 1957 in the Sankei Shimbun, following a Japanese boy named Makoto who survives after being cast into the sea near Alaska. Raised by seals and eventually integrated into their world, he becomes a "General of the Seas", a hero fighting hunters and whaling fleets alongside the giant killer whale ‘Gold Flag’.
Zoku Shōnen Ace ("Continuation of Shōnen Ace") serialized from 1959 to 1961 in the Chubu Nippon Shimbun, picks up where the original left off but takes a dramatic turn. Yamakawa moved Makoto from the icy North Pacific to tropical Africa, where he encounters new threats alongside his companion Mary. They now face hunters, "Leopard Men," rhinoceroses, elephants, and ostriches in landscapes that prioritize visual spectacle over geographic accuracy. By merging the "Hero of the North" with jungle elements from his greatest hit Shōnen Kenya, Yamakawa created a fantasy wilderness that proved the spirit of the "wild boy" was exactly what young readers craved.
