Description

Splash page that shows the very first reveal of Arkea, a new mutant (actually a sentient bacterium born over a billion years ago as one of the first forms of life on Earth alongside her brother, Sublime), introduced in this issue to the X-men universe.

I found the depiction of this character in this splash very appealing and wondered, if the inks (they differ from most of the pages in the album) were probably done by Olivier Coipel himself and not by Mark Morales. So I asked Mark and he answered: "Yes. That one is 95% Olivier's inks. I think I may have inked only the flames."

Comment

Wood and Coipel delivered in 2013 a highly acclaimed superhero relaunch with "X-Men" #1. They introduced a female cast of all leading roles, filled with powerful, fascinating characters, enticing action, a smart villain, high stakes and stunning visuals. Coipels art is especially great. Coipel embraces and celebrates individual characters, he finds personality and voice for each character from the way they walk to the clothes they wear.
