Wonderful extremely early & historical official promotional illustration by early Disney artist Win Smith. Garry Apgar's book "Mickey Mouse: Emblem of the American Spirit" cited a publication of this drawing in "The Outlook and Independent" July 23rd 1930 (please take a look in the additional picture), though it might have actually been published quite a bit before that...as Win Smith left the Disney studio in mid/late April 1930, this would place the date of this drawing well into the first 3-4 months of 1930...
Win Smith was an animator and comic artist, best remembered for being an early artist to draw the 'Mickey Mouse' newspaper comic strip. The Mickey Mouse comic strip debuted January 13th 1930, and for the first full 4 weeks (24 dailies in total, until February 8th 1930) Ub Iwerks pencilled the strip, with Win Smith providing the inks (story by Walt Disney himself). Then Iwerks left the studio and Smith was left to do pencils AND inks on the strip (story still by Walt Disney). His tenure only lasted a couple of months, until he had a falling out with Walt Disney and left the studio, his last strip being May 3rd 1930...Floyd Gottfredson took over May 5th and would stay with the Mickey Daily for 45 1/2 years...
