About Frédéric Toublanc
Frédéric Toublanc began his career in comics rather late in life, when he took over the artwork of the historical series 'Vasco' from Gilles Chaillet in 2007. The Parisian artist had grown up reading comics however, and was particularly fond of the work of Gotlib, René Goscinny and Morris. For his later realistic work, Toublanc has especially studied the work of Burne Hogarth. He also developed a keen interest in the Middle-Ages, regularly visiting medieval sites throughout France and reading books about dynasties and certain religious orders.
Toublanc attended the Faculty of Plastic Arts in Paris, and began his career as a designer for advertising agencies. He has been a freelance illustrator since 1990, working mostly for advertisements and magazines. He was well in his 40s when he was approached to succeed Gilles Chaillet as the artist of the 14th century Italian banker 'Vasco'. While Chaillet continued to write the stories, Toublanc had the task to make the historically correct depictions of the medieval palaces, characters and landscapes. The duo made four albums at Le Lombard between 2007 and 2012, after which Dominique Rousseau became the new artist.
Frédéric Toublanc was the artist of the 29th album of 'Tanguy & Laverdure' (Dargaud, 2015), the classic aviation series created by Albert Uderzo and Jean-Michel Charlier in 1959.
