Commentaire

Un été indien, written by Hugo Pratt and drawn by Milo Manara, is a dramatic, poetic and tragic story of indians and colonists in New England in the 17th century. The complete story was published as an album in 1987, has been in print in several languages since then and is generally considered a masterpiece.

This page shows the fallout from the indian attack on the Lewis home: Elijah wants to kill Reverend Black and has to be restrained, the soldiers with the reverend are leaving for New Canaan, but the Lewis family will not join them. In the last panel, Elijah has to console and confront a devastated Phillis in their ruined home, full of dead indians.

This is actually more than one album page. Manara drew all the pages as three large separate strips. Some of the strips have been sold separately. The previous owner wanted to round out the sequence in question, so the four original art strips shown here are actually page 77 and the first strip of page 78 tied (carefully and discreetly) together. The strips are 20 x 46 cm each, so this original art page+ is very large.
