He settled in New York City, where he freelanced for science fiction magazines and several commercial studios. Adkins started his career in comics in 1965, when he joined Wallace Wood's studios. During his career, he worked on many other Marvel titles, often as an inker, including 'Dr Strange'. He was also an assistant on the 'Rip Kirby' strip, that was originally created by Alex Raymond. Other publishers he worked for are Charlton, DC ('Aquaman', 'Batman'), Dell, Eclipse, Harvey and Western Publishing. He has made magazine illustrations for Argosy (with Wood), Amazing Stories, Fantastic, Galaxy Science Fiction, Infinity, Monster Parade, Science Fiction Adventures, Spectrum, Worlds of If and other magazines.
