Description

Original page De Rode Ridder 157; page 35 from the story Avalon.
Indian ink + mixed media art.

A beautiful and atmospheric plate of King Arthur defeating Lodogran, Merlijn using his powers against Lodogran’s army, and also featuring De Rode Ridder.
Dimensions: 45 x 33 cm.

Plates by Karel Biddeloo are much more than black and white line drawings, as he regularly used mixed media, an art form which he mastered like no other.
Mixed media is a technique in which different materials are used. Many different mixed media techniques exist.

This plate of Rode Ridder was made using a combination of Indian ink and photocopy.
He was inspired in this by Jack Kirby, whom he greatly admired and used the same technique in the second half of his career.
He often did this for castles and scenery.
He also often applied some black spots or splashes in an illustration using a sponge.

As a result, these plates are still highly decorative without colours.
