Richard explained "It is pretty nice -- it's on sturdy bristol. I used to work out the cover drawings with heavy drawing/erasing - and then draw over that with pen to get the lines as tight as I could -- so I'd do it on bristol, then trace the final rough (like that one) onto the watercolor paper."

Richard Sala, illustrateur et auteur américain prolifique au style très personnel, mêle dans ses œuvres mystère, horreur et fantaisie. Aux États-Unis, il a signé depuis une quinzaine d’années, pour des maisons d’édition telles que Dark Horse ou Fantagraphics, les planches de nombreux contes, toujours dans le registre du roman noir, tendance gothique. Il a également réalisé, entre autres, une série animée retransmise sur MTV, Invisible Hands.
