Description

Tom Beauvais original movie poster artwork is very thin on the ground and I was very luckily offered this painting privately at a surprisingly affordable asking price. Not a movie I claim to be familiar with but, here, my focus is on a standalone piece of art designed to entice moviegoers into cinemas (and, oh, what a deliciously outrageous tagline!).

In researching Visconti’s movie, I learned that the movie was not well received during the time of its initial release (badly edited as it lengthy running time was slashed), but was later re-issued in a full version and has since gone on to be more respected over the ensuing years.

“Historical evocation of Ludwig, king of Bavaria, from his crowning in 1864 until his death in 1886, as a romantic hero. Fan of Richard Wagner, betrayed by him, in love with his cousin Elisabeth of Austria, abandoned by her, tormented by his homosexuality, he will little by little slip towards madness.”

Ludwig is a 1972 film directed by Italian director Luchino Visconti about the life and death of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Helmut Berger stars as Ludwig, Romy Schneider reprises her role as Empress Elisabeth of Austria (from the 1955 film Sissi and its two sequels).

The film was made in Munich and other parts of Bavaria at these locations: Roseninsel, Berg Castle, Lake Starnberg, Castle Herrenchiemsee, Castle Hohenschwangau, Linderhof Palace, Cuvilliés Theatre, Nymphenburg Palace, Ettal, Kaiservilla and Neuschwanstein Castle. Visconti suffered a stroke during filming.
