About Joan

Joan Spiess was fascinated by sports since a very young age. He also had an interest in drawing, which he developed at the School for Fine Arts in Mulhouse. From 1985, he collaborated on the fanzine Cartoonoïde, where he created 'La Petite Lucie', a character that he never abandoned. In 1988, he met Éric Cartier, with whom he founded the International Stakhano Association. This association promotes small-press productions and organizes exhibitions. At the same time, Joan continued creating self-published albums of 'Lucie'. Later on, Éditions la Sirène published one album of 'Lucie'. From 1994, game pages featuring Lucie appeared in the magazine Spirou. In these pages Joan often referred to his other passion, sports. In addition, Joan has illustrated 'Retour de Manivelle', an album co-scripted by Harty and published by Rakham in 1990. With Harty and Ptiluc, he cooperated on 'Clope Attitude' and 'Bio Attitude', two albums published by Vents d'Ouest in 1999 and 2001, and also on 'Accros du Reggae: Cool' and 'Accros de Rap', published by Albin Michel in 2003. Joan and Ptiluc began the series 'Frigo' at Les Humanoïdes Associés in 2000. Text (c) Lambiek
