Description
A young Barbara Gordon has run away from home on Halloween. Jim is being over protective and, discovering she's run off, reads her diary:
"He is my Dad, and he isn't my dad. I try my best... He doesn't try at all...... Maybe I just don't belong here"
Cut to this page where Barbara finds herself alone and in danger.
Love this page, a wonderful example of Tim Sale's mastery.
To be blunt, the colors of the published page detract from the layout. Love how the bridge creates a natural border to a quasi top panel.
Love the park details. The shrubbery on either side of the page has a Toth-like quality. The leafless branches on either side frame Barbara and draw the eye. The last panel, with that perspective, showing Babs springing into action.
I believe this story marks the beginning of Jeph and Tim collaboration, which lead to Long Halloween and Dark Victory.
So happy to have a glorious page from where it all began
