This translates into "When the vanquished made history" It is a great example of Toppi's unique line work and textures as well as his incredible and signature layout style. I keep telling myself no more Toppi but here I am and will undoubtedly be here again.

This piece is about the Battle of Teuotoberg Forest in 9 CE (common era, I had to look that up, new way of saying AD). In this battle, an alliance of Germanic people were able to defeat 3 legions of Roman troops. The leader was Arminius and he had received training in Roman military strategy and was able to trick and anticipate their attacks. Arminius was originally the son of a Germanic leader and had been sent to Rome as a tribute and held as a captive. Later, rising through the ranks he became an advisor to Varus who was attacking the Germanic tribes and Arminius started to undermine the Romans and conspire with his kin. It is an intriguing story I was previously unfamiliar with.
