After his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, Michel de Bom focused on comics scriptwriting. He edited the short-lived fanzine Zazou and then joined the magazine Spirou in the mid-1970s, together with Watch, Dédé and Bosse. Among Bom's early scripts were series illustrated by his former Zazou colleagues Watch and Dédé, including 'Les Déboussolés', 'Alcofribas' and the editorial page 'Les Grandes Énigmes de la Troisième Planète'. He worked with Charles Degotte on some 'Flagada' stories in the late 1970s and created 'Big Joe' with Malik.
