From Hell Chapter 2, page 3

This page depicts a key scene in the From Hell story: The ten year old William Gull, on his father´ s barge in the dark Limehouse Cut tunnel, musing on his one future big project in life, "a task most difficult, most necessary and severe". His father reminds him of what the Lord requires, and young William assures him that the task will not be done for Glory´ s sake. The Biblical quotation "What does the Lord require of thee" is of course the title for the seminal Chapter 4 in the story. And the barge floats out of the tunnel and into Limehouse in London´ s East End, from darkness into a brilliant light.

This scene is repeated in Chapter 14, where the dying Sir William Gull has some very weird and peculiar mental images.
