Edward Dudley Pout was born at Frog Island Farm in Herne, Kent. He got an Art Scholarship at Margarate School of Art at the early age of 13, and stayed for two years. He worked in the family farming business, before becoming a commercial artist. He took his earliest assignments from the East Kent Poster Services in Dover and then became manager of Stoll Art Studios in Chatham. Pout was an artist for British film posters in London until 1938. After World War II, Pout became an artist for Hulton Press magazines Eagle and Girl. His features included 'The Adventure Club' for Eagle and 'Yvette' and 'Travel Girl' for Girl. He worked fulltime for Girl from 1952, drawing serials like 'Tess and the Mystery Journey', and 'Pat of Paradise Island', as well as series like 'Vicky' (1954-58) and 'Angela, Air Hostess' (1958-61). Pout continued to draw strips, including biographical stories, for Girl until 1963. He then retired from the field and returned ot farming, specializing in cross-breeding cattle. After his retirement in 1973, he took on oil painting. He wrote his autobiography, that was published as 'The Life and Art of One Man of Kent' in 1982. Text (c) Lambiek
