Biography
Cartoonist, born in Cupar; worked with a solicitors for ten years; first published in the Fife Herald, c.1928-29; moved to London to try to get into music publishing, worked in various jobs including an automatic machine contractors; entered advertising, designing 'the biggest sign in the world' for the Ministry of Food, which read 'Food is the munition of war - don't waste it'; received call up papers in 1941 the day before his studio was destroyed by bombing; continued cartoon work during service in RAF, publishing in 'London Opinion', 'Men Only' and 'Punch'; became freelance cartoonist 1945 and began to publish in America, designing covers for 'The New Yorker' as well as contributing regularly to 'Punch'.
