This example is from Will’s second of three instructional books, Graphic Storytelling, which he originally self-published under his Poorhouse Press imprint in 1996. Eisner used cave people, possibly Neanderthals, to underscore the fact that storytelling goes very deep into the human past, and that drawings on cave walls may be our earliest evidence of telling stories with pictures, known today as comics. In this example, the cave wall panels tell the story of a successful hunt.

William Erwin Eisner, known as Will Eisner, is an American comic book writer. He was the creator of the Spirit and of the concept of the "graphic novel" and its first applications in the United States, as well as a theorist and editorial director. He is a major figure in 20th-century comics and one of its greatest authors.
