Fantastic large (46cm x 49cm) ink & watercolor Pogo cover painting by the great Walt Kelly (1913-1973). First published as the cover of the Washington Star - The Sunday Star Magazine March 8th 1959...later it was reprinted numerous times in fanzines and books on Kelly/Pogo...

To me this is THE most beautiful Pogo artwork that I have ever seen. The whole gang (Pogo, Albert, Churchy, Owl & Porky) on a boat (called « The Washington Star ») in front of the Washington Monument...the broken Golf club they have fished out of the water is supposed to belong to then US president Dwight D. Eisenhower (34th president, 1953-61), known for his love of the game as well as his temper...

About Walt Kelly

Walter Crawford Kelly, Jr. commonly known as Walt Kelly, was an American animator and cartoonist, best known for the comic strip Pogo. He began his animation career in 1936 at Walt Disney Studios, contributing to Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Dumbo. In 1941 Kelly transferred at the age of 28 to work at Dell Comics, where he created Pogo, which eventually became his platform for political and philosophical commentary.
