En 1968, le jeune Barry Windsor-Smith a expédié de son Angleterre natale quelques planches d'essai qu'il avait réalisées à l'intention des bureaux de Marvel Comics à New-York. Après avoir reçu une réponse encourageante (du moins l'a-t'il jugée telle), il a pris l'avion et "the rest is history" ! Et, bien des années plus tard, voilà un morceau de cette histoire...
Je ne sais pas si cette aventure a été complétée, mais cette page 3 grand format vibrionne d'action dans le plus pur esprit Silver Age et ça aurait vraiement été cool de pouvoir la lire en entier !
Mais, pour finir, laissons la parole à Stan Lee, qui dans ses Bullpen Bulletins de Février 1969, décrivait ainsi l'arrivée de BWS dans le petit mode du comics :
"Everyone's talking about Bashful Barry Smith, the surprising new staffer we just imported from merrie old England! Barry's artwork is just not to be believed! This young, long-haired, titanically talented Britisher has a style which combines the pulse-pounding power of Jack (King) Kirby with the off-beat improvisations of Jaunty Jim Steranko! You've gotta see it to believe it! And see it you will..."
Je n'ai aucun doute sur le fait que Stan Lee avait CETTE planche sous les yeux lorsqu’il a écrit ces mots ! Nuff said !
